Best Crypto Exchanges
Regulatory status, custody arrangements and fee transparency — before the coin list.
Last updated: 2026-08-11
An exchange balance is a claim on a company. Whether that claim survives stress depends on regulation, asset segregation and the exchange's own balance sheet.
Wallcrest evaluates exchanges primarily on custody and regulatory standing. Fee tables and asset lists change weekly; the structure protecting your assets does not.
How we chose
Wallcrest shortlists are built from published, verifiable provider documentation and regulatory registers. We do not accept payment for placement or ranking.
- Authorisation
- Whether the entity is authorised or registered in your jurisdiction, including MiCA authorisation across the EU.
- Client asset segregation
- Whether customer assets are held separately from company assets, and how that is evidenced.
- Proof of reserves and liabilities
- Reserve attestations are only meaningful alongside audited liabilities.
- Published fee schedule
- Maker/taker fees, spread on 'simple buy' interfaces, deposit and withdrawal costs.
- Withdrawal reliability
- Documented limits, processing times and any history of withdrawal suspensions.
- Security practice
- Cold storage share, withdrawal allowlisting, hardware key support and incident disclosure history.

These are the attributes we publish for every provider in this category, and exactly how each is defined.

| Trading fees | Published maker and taker fees at the entry tier. | Verification in progress |

| Withdrawal terms | Fiat and crypto withdrawal fees and limits. | Verification in progress |
| Assets listed | Number of assets available to the reader's region. | Verification in progress |
We're finalising our verified provider data for this category. Wallcrest publishes fees, rates, minimums and terms only after checking them against the provider's own documentation and recording the date we checked. Rather than show unverified figures, we leave this table empty until that work is complete.
“Visit site” buttons are placeholders until commercial relationships exist and are disclosed. No provider has paid for inclusion here, because there is nothing to pay for yet.
See how we review for the verification process.
What to weigh before you choose
- Deposit insurance does not apply
- Crypto held at an exchange is not covered by FDIC insurance, EU deposit guarantee schemes or the UK FSCS.
- The 'simple' buy button is the expensive one
- Instant-buy interfaces usually embed a wider spread than the exchange's own order book.
