Best Online Brokers
How to choose a brokerage account on regulation, total cost and the markets you actually need.
Last updated: 2026-08-11
A brokerage account is infrastructure. It should be safe, cheap, and capable of holding what you intend to hold for as long as you intend to hold it.
Most 'best broker' lists rank on headline commission. That is the least durable variable. Regulation, investor compensation, currency conversion costs and the ability to hold your chosen instruments matter far more over a decade.
How we chose
Wallcrest shortlists are built from published, verifiable provider documentation and regulatory registers. We do not accept payment for placement or ranking.
- Regulatory standing
- Which entity you contract with, which regulator authorises it, and which investor compensation scheme applies to your account.
- All-in cost
- Commission plus FX conversion, custody or inactivity fees, withdrawal charges and any spread markup.
- Market and instrument access
- Whether the exchanges, ETFs and account types you need are actually available to your residency.
- Custody and segregation
- How client assets are held, whether they are segregated, and the firm's securities lending policy.
- Execution and transparency
- Published order routing and execution quality disclosures, where the regulator requires them.
- Platform and support
- Reliability during volatile sessions, order types available, and how the firm handles corporate actions.

We're finalising our verified provider data for this category. Wallcrest publishes fees, rates, minimums and terms only after checking them against the provider's own documentation and recording the date we checked. Rather than show unverified figures, we leave this table empty until that work is complete.
“Visit site” buttons are placeholders until commercial relationships exist and are disclosed. No provider has paid for inclusion here, because there is nothing to pay for yet.
See how we review for the verification process.
What to weigh before you choose
- Check the entity, not the brand
- Global brokers operate through different legal entities by region. Your protections come from the entity named on your account agreement.
- FX costs compound
- If you buy foreign-currency assets regularly, a conversion fee can exceed commission many times over across a year.
- Transfers out matter
- Look at the cost and process for transferring holdings to another broker before you need to.
